Interview to Blutmåne (USA)

rottenpages

1. Hello my friend, pleasure to have you on Rotten Pages'zine. How are you doing today? Let us set the scene first. Where do we find you right now? Please describe your surroundings.

Redhook (Malcolm): In a small room in the cold, dreary wintery weather of the northern united states at the southern border of canada toiling away in the creative process of creating new music trying to keep warm.

2. BlutMane is a two-piece black/death metal project with members based in the Upper Midwest USA. Could you please tell us about your musical background. It is known that Bryan played on another band prior to joining BlutMane.

Redhook (Malcolm):I started playing guitar when I was young, angry, and pissed off at the world. After refining what skills I had, I tried to form several bands whilst still in high school that never amounted to anything seeing as I was the only one truly dedicated to the craft of music. I've been playing for almost two decades now, and BlutMane is my first serious musical project. It is a surreal experience to have something that has my blood and time put into it actually being released.

3. What is the scene like in your area? Is it important that there is some sort of local scene for a band to develop?

Redhook (Malcolm): The metal scene where I live is pretty much non-existent. Living in a small isolated town in the northern midwest has produced a fairly stereotypical "country" scene with no live music to boot.

4. Being played during several years on previous bands, both of you seem pretty mature and experienced musicians. Of course I wonder if you are finally satisfied with reached the desired goal with BLUTMANE?

Redhook (Malcolm): My goal with this project is to make music that I would actively want to seek out and listen. Creating those fun and heavy riffs are what I strive to create.

5. The metal world is known for its intense brotherhood and camaraderie. What's the craziest and most memorable experiences you\rquote ve had as musicians?

Redhook (Malcolm): As this is my first serious "band", I can't say I've had any insane musical experiences yet but I hope to change that in the coming future!

6. Nighthouse is pretty well produced. in which studio did you record it? And who took care of the mixing and mastering?

Redhook (Malcolm):Everything for this EP was done at home in our own studio setups. I would send riffs to Bryan and he woulds record his vocals and process them as he saw fit, send them my way. Being a primarily 7 string player, the main two guitars used to record the EP were a Solar e2.7 and EII katana into studio one. Mixing and mastering was done by me with a lot of effort going into it.

7. How do you guys inside the band divide the compositional work? What has been your favourite part of all songwriting process?

Redhook (Malcolm):I composed/wrote the instrumental parts of the music (guitars, bass, and drums) while Bryan does all the vocals along with some sound FX and production. He also created our music videos Drowned in Unison and Torrential death.

8. In general: What fascinates you about your debut release? What would be your moment of joy on this particular album?

Redhook (Malcolm): Creating music and riffs I would seek out to listen to is something that I enjoyed a lot. Creating a song based off of one or two riffs was a fun challenge. My favorite moment on this EP is defintely the song "Below". The way music progresses really portrays the characters descent into madness.

9. Do you ever feel any kind of pressure or lack of creating new riffs when writing new material? Does everything happen more in the flow way? Do you have to be in a certain mood?

Redhook (Malcolm): Coming up with exciting riffs is a challenge. You've got to come up with a hundred terrible riffs before that one really good one manages to eek out into the world. I was trying to outdo each and every riff until I came to a realization that each riff shouldn't have to necessarily be better than another if it suits the song. Having a few hours to myself is defintely helpful to the creative process and puts me into that flow state.

10. The bands songs unfold the story of a mythical location deep in the American heartland where symbolic monstrous entities converge. Tell me, what are the things that you talk about on your lyrics?

Redhook (Malcolm): I can't tell so much about the lyrics, but I will elaborate on the musical inspiration for each track:

Track 1- Torrential Death

I was listening to a lot of death metal at the time, before I started incorporating more black metal styles into my playing. This was meant as an all out death metal onslaught to assault the listeners ears.

Track 2- Below

Below was inspired by HP Lovecraft's "Beneath the Pyramids", the track follows a disciple and confronts an evil beyond comprehension, succumbing to madness.

Track 3- Drowned In Unison

This is one of the more upbeat, "bouncy" songs. After 2 tracks of all out assault, it provides a light break musically with a more airy feel to it.

Track 4- Driven to Ingestion

When writing this song, Originally titled, "King of the Void", I wanted to make the heaviest riff and track possible. The kind that gives instant stank face.

Track 5- The Night House

This track was inspired by a lot of atmospheric black metal with soaring lead lines on top of blast beats and very simplistic riffs.

11. How do you define underground and where do you see yourself and your band in it?

Redhook (Malcolm): Underground to me is a place where there are no limits to what you can do with your music outside commercial reign and influence. BlutMane is part of a much larger picture of underground activity but is no less insignificant.

12. We live in a globalized world where there are no borders to be crossed thanks to the internet. How do you best utilize this to gain the outmost for you band?

Redhook (Malcolm): This project would not have been possible if not for the internet and social media. Being able to create from the comfort of your own home is a great feeling. Using social media to reach an expanded audience has been great as well. A lot of our interest has been from outside the US based on the regional demographics.

13. Are there some parts of the world that really impress you due to the quality of the bands coming from the same area? I mean are you involved with what happens in South America, Asia, Europe???

Redhook (Malcolm): I am a huge fan of the European metal scene. Sweden, poland, germany have tons of fantastic bands wo which I listen. As I mentioned, a lot of our demographics thus far are from outside our home country.

14. We have come to the end of the interview, thank you for taking the time off to answer our questions, and we wish you the best in all upcoming endeavours!
