Interview to SEPHIROTH (Italy)

1. How are you doing today? Let us set the scene first. Where do we find you right now? Please describe your surroundings.

I’m doing well, thank you for having me. I'm Tiferet, mastermind of the band. Right now I’m in our workspace, surrounded by instruments, books, and notes connected to the writing process of Xsephiroth. It’s a place that feels halfway between a rehearsal room and a study — somewhere I can bridge theory, philosophy, and the raw instinct of extreme music.

2. Xsephiroth is a quintet — how long have you known each other? Would it be possible to tell us more about your personal musical background?

We have known each other for several years, crossing paths through different bands and projects before finally converging into Xsephiroth in 2013. Each member has a background in both metal and classical studies, which is why the band balances brutality and sophistication. Personally, I come from a strong passion for extreme metal, but also from a background and taste in symphonic music, which shaped the orchestral approach that permeates the album.

3. When did you first hear metal and what did you like about it? What was the progress of your moving from outside to inside the genre, as first a fan and then a musician?

The first encounter with metal was through the classic records of the ’90s — both the Scandinavian black/death scene and the symphonic extremes that followed. What struck me was the sense of transcendence and catharsis in the music. From there it was a natural progression: from being a listener to picking up instruments and eventually creating music that could channel that same overwhelming intensity.

4. First of all I must congratulate you for your debut album Down the Tormented Chthonic Path. It is a very solid work with a consistent sound! Of course I wonder if you are satisfied with it and if you reached the desired goal?

Thank you very much. We are satisfied, because the album fully embodies our vision: a descent through an infernal and chthonic path, where sound mirrors the metaphysical themes. Of course, as musicians, we always hear things we could refine, but overall this record achieves the atmosphere and depth we set out to capture. The work took several years.

5. What were the goals you had in mind when you started to record it, any elements you definitely wanted to have on the songs?

We wanted an album that was coherent both conceptually and sonically. Symphonic layers were essential, but always as a dark undercurrent, never ornamental. We also aimed for a sound that feels monumental, almost liturgical, but still rooted in extreme metal ferocity. Every song had to contribute to the narrative of the path, with no filler.

6. When you work in the recordings, what kind of process do you go through? Do you come in all prepared or do you improvise?

Our writing process is flexible and creative. We usually enter the studio with open mind. That said, we deliberately leave room for textures, vocal inflections, and orchestral nuances to emerge spontaneously during the sessions. This way the songs retain instinct.

7. Where is your favorite place to write your songs? And from what symbols, feelings, stories or environments do you get inspiration?

Songwriting usually happens in rehearsal room. Inspiration flows from philosophy, occultism, psychology, mythology, ritual traditions, and the inner confrontation with archetypes of death and transformation. The “place” is less a physical location than a liminal state of mind — a threshold where silence, symbols, and emotion converge into sound.

8. I already listened to the album a few times. The first thing that caught my attention was that there are a lot of symphonic elements and a lot of melodies also. What do you feel is the quintessential element of Xsephiroth sound?

The core of Xsephiroth’s sound lies in duality: the constant tension between violence and solemnity. The symphonic layers are not decorative, but pillars of the atmosphere, intensifying the aggression rather than softening it. This coexistence of ritualistic grandeur and extreme ferocity is what defines us.

9. With so many bands coming up these days, how do you manage to keep your material relevant? How challenging is it to come up with newer material? What is the thought process when writing the songs?

We don’t focus on being “relevant” in terms of trends; we focus on being honest. When writing, the guiding question is: Does this sound feel necessary? If the answer is no, the riff or section is discarded. That uncompromising approach makes the music authentic. The challenge is not about novelty for its own sake, but about crafting something that resonates as inevitable, as if the song had to exist.

10. Do your music and lyrics have any comprehensive ideological background, or it rather reflects your immediate moods and ideas when it comes to composing music?

There is a clear ideological backbone: Xsephiroth explores the chthonic dimension, metaphysical death, and the alchemical process of transformation and creation. Lyrics and sound are part of one continuum — they aim to ritualize the descent and eventual illumination. Personal moods may influence details, but the foundation is rooted in a larger symbolic and philosophical framework.

11. And what about inspiration outside of Extreme metal and music in general? What else fuels your inspiration? What kind of art do you enjoy in your spare time? Literature, cinematography, theatre?

Outside of extreme metal, I’m inspired by literature — mythology, esoteric texts, and existential philosophy in particular. Visual arts also play a role, especially paintings where light and shadow have a symbolic weight. In cinema, I’m drawn to works that merge horror, surrealism, and metaphysical reflection. All of these art forms influence the way I build atmosphere and narrative in the music.

12. During several years, the Italian metal scene has been a special one, with many very important and unique bands. How do you see this from your point of view?

Italy has always had a unique identity in metal. Even within extreme genres, expecially in underground scene. The scene may not always gain the recognition it deserves internationally.

13. How much time and effort do you spend on the band to get everything to look and sound the right way?

An enormous amount of our free time. For us, Xsephiroth is not just a band but a total artistic vision. We work meticulously on songwriting, production, orchestration, artwork, and concept to make sure every element reflects the same atmosphere. Countless hours go into aligning sound and image, because coherence is everything.

14. What is music for you? Does it bring you some new emotions or it helps you to get rid of some negative emotions?

Music is both catharsis and transformation. It’s not only about releasing negativity, but about turning it into something meaningful — almost alchemical. Through music, we confront shadows and give them a form that can be shared. It opens new emotional landscapes, both destructive and luminous.

15. How do you feel the metal scene has evolved in Italy over recent years, particularly in your own genre?

In our genre, I see a growing tendency toward experimentation, mixing symphonic and atmospheric elements with traditional extremity. This evolution creates fertile ground for projects like ours.

16. With the easy access to internet you can spread your music across the globe just sitting in front of your computer. How much effort do you put into promoting the band world-wide?

The internet allows us to reach listeners worldwide, but we want every piece of content — visual, textual, musical — to be consistent with our artistic vision. Promotion, for us, is not just exposure; it is an extension of the same world that the music builds.

17. It might be too early, but what can we expect from the forthcoming album?

At this stage we have decided to take a moment of pause to enjoy and immerge into the work we've complete. We live the present.

18. We have come to the last question of the interview. What are the last words for people out there?

Estoy bien, gracias por invitarme. Soy Tiferet, la mente maestra de la banda. Ahora mismo estoy en nuestro taller, rodeada de instrumentos, libros y notas relacionadas con el proceso de composición de Xsephiroth. Es un lugar que se siente como un híbrido entre una sala de ensayo y un estudio; un sitio donde puedo fusionar la teoría, la filosofía y el instinto puro de la música extrema.

2. Xsephiroth es un quinteto. ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que se conocen? ¿Podrían contarnos más sobre su trayectoria musical personal?

Nos conocemos desde hace varios años, habiendo coincidido en diferentes bandas y proyectos antes de finalmente formar Xsephiroth en 2013. Cada miembro tiene formación tanto en metal como en música clásica, lo que explica el equilibrio entre brutalidad y sofisticación que logra la banda. Personalmente, me apasiona el metal extremo, pero también tengo formación y gusto por la música sinfónica, lo que influyó en el enfoque orquestal que impregna el álbum.

3. ¿Cuándo escuchaste metal por primera vez y qué te gustó? ¿Cómo fue tu proceso de transición de ser ajeno al género a ser parte de él, primero como fan y luego como músico?

Mi primer contacto con el metal fue a través de los discos clásicos de los 90: tanto la escena black/death escandinava como los extremos sinfónicos que le siguieron. Lo que me impactó fue la sensación de trascendencia y catarsis que transmitía la música. A partir de ahí, la progresión fue natural: de ser oyente a tocar instrumentos y, finalmente, a crear música capaz de canalizar esa misma intensidad abrumadora.

4. En primer lugar, debo felicitarte por tu álbum debut, Down the Tormented Chthonic Path. ¡Es un trabajo muy sólido con un sonido consistente! Por supuesto, me pregunto si estás satisfecho con él y si has alcanzado el objetivo deseado.

Muchas gracias. Estamos satisfechos, pues el álbum plasma a la perfección nuestra visión: un descenso por un sendero infernal y ctónico, donde el sonido refleja los temas metafísicos. Claro que, como músicos, siempre encontramos aspectos que podríamos perfeccionar, pero en general este disco logra la atmósfera y la profundidad que buscábamos. El trabajo nos llevó varios años.

5. ¿Cuáles eran los objetivos que tenías en mente cuando comenzaste a grabar? ¿Había algún elemento que definitivamente querías incluir en las canciones?

Queríamos un álbum coherente tanto conceptual como sonoramente. Las capas sinfónicas eran esenciales, pero siempre como un trasfondo oscuro, nunca ornamental. Buscábamos un sonido monumental, casi litúrgico, pero arraigado en la ferocidad del metal extremo. Cada canción debía contribuir a la narrativa, sin relleno.

6. Cuando trabajas en las grabaciones, ¿qué tipo de proceso sigues? ¿Llegas todo preparado o improvisas?

Nuestro proceso de composición es flexible y creativo. Solemos entrar al estudio con la mente abierta. Dicho esto, dejamos espacio deliberadamente para que las texturas, las inflexiones vocales y los matices orquestales surjan espontáneamente durante las sesiones. De esta manera, las canciones conservan su esencia.

7. ¿Cuál es tu lugar favorito para componer tus canciones? ¿Y de qué símbolos, sentimientos, historias o entornos obtienes inspiración?

La composición suele darse en la sala de ensayo. La inspiración surge de la filosofía, el ocultismo, la psicología, la mitología, las tradiciones rituales y la confrontación interna con los arquetipos de la muerte y la transformación. El «lugar» no es tanto un sitio físico como un estado mental liminal: un umbral donde el silencio, los símbolos y la emoción convergen en sonido.

. Ya escuché el álbum varias veces. Lo primero que me llamó la atención fue la gran cantidad de elementos sinfónicos y melodías. ¿Cuál crees que es el elemento esencial del sonido de Xsephiroth?

La esencia del sonido de Xsephiroth reside en la dualidad: la tensión constante entre violencia y solemnidad. Las capas sinfónicas no son meramente decorativas, sino pilares de la atmósfera, que intensifican la agresividad en lugar de atenuarla. Esta coexistencia de grandeza ritual y ferocidad extrema es lo que nos define.

9. Con tantas bandas nuevas surgiendo hoy en día, ¿cómo logran mantener su música relevante? ¿Qué tan difícil es crear material nuevo? ¿Cuál es el proceso creativo al componer las canciones?

No nos centramos en seguir las tendencias, sino en la autenticidad. Al componer, la pregunta clave es: ¿Este sonido resulta necesario? Si la respuesta es no, descartamos el riff o la sección. Este enfoque intransigente dota a la música de autenticidad. El reto no reside en la novedad por sí misma, sino en crear algo que resuene como algo inevitable, como si la canción tuviera que existir.

10. ¿Tu música y tus letras tienen algún trasfondo ideológico profundo, o más bien reflejan tus estados de ánimo e ideas inmediatas a la hora de componer música?

Existe una clara base ideológica: Xsephiroth explora la dimensión ctónica, la muerte metafísica y el proceso alquímico de transformación y creación. Letras y sonido forman parte de un mismo continuo, con el objetivo de ritualizar el descenso y la iluminación final. Si bien los estados de ánimo personales pueden influir en los detalles, la obra se fundamenta en un marco simbólico y filosófico más amplio.

11. ¿Y qué hay de la inspiración fuera del metal extremo y la música en general? ¿Qué más alimenta tu inspiración? ¿Qué tipo de arte disfrutas en tu tiempo libre? ¿Literatura, cine, teatro?

Fuera del metal extremo, me inspira la literatura, en particular la mitología, los textos esotéricos y la filosofía existencialista. Las artes visuales también influyen, especialmente la pintura, donde la luz y la sombra poseen un peso simbólico. En el cine, me atraen las obras que fusionan el terror, el surrealismo y la reflexión metafísica. Todas estas formas de arte influyen en la manera en que construyo la atmósfera y la narrativa en mi música.

12. Durante varios años, la escena metalera italiana ha sido especial, con muchas bandas muy importantes y únicas. ¿Cómo lo ves desde tu punto de vista?

Italia siempre ha tenido una identidad única en el metal, incluso dentro de los géneros extremos, especialmente en la escena underground. Puede que esta escena no siempre reciba el reconocimiento internacional que merece.

13. ¿Cuánto tiempo y esfuerzo dedicas a la banda para que todo se vea y suene bien?

Gran parte de nuestro tiempo libre. Para nosotros, Xsephiroth no es solo una banda, sino una visión artística completa. Trabajamos meticulosamente en la composición, la producción, la orquestación, el diseño gráfico y el concepto para asegurar que cada elemento refleje la misma atmósfera. Invertimos incontables horas en armonizar sonido e imagen, porque la coherencia lo es todo.

14. ¿Qué significa la música para ti? ¿Te aporta nuevas emociones o te ayuda a deshacerte de algunas emociones negativas?

La música es catarsis y transformación. No se trata solo de liberar la negatividad, sino de convertirla en algo significativo, casi alquímico. A través de la música, confrontamos nuestras sombras y les damos una forma que podemos compartir. Abre nuevos paisajes emocionales, tanto destructivos como luminosos.

15. ¿Cómo crees que ha evolucionado la escena del metal en Italia en los últimos años, particularmente en tu propio género?

En nuestro género, observo una creciente tendencia hacia la experimentación, mezclando elementos sinfónicos y atmosféricos con la excentricidad tradicional. Esta evolución crea un terreno fértil para proyectos como el nuestro.

16. Con el fácil acceso a internet puedes difundir tu música por todo el mundo con solo sentarte frente a tu ordenador. ¿Cuánto esfuerzo dedicas a promocionar la banda a nivel mundial?

Internet nos permite llegar a oyentes de todo el mundo, pero queremos que cada pieza de contenido —visual, textual y musical— sea coherente con nuestra visión artística. Para nosotros, la promoción no es solo exposición; es una extensión del mismo universo que crea la música.

17. Puede que sea demasiado pronto, pero ¿qué podemos esperar del próximo álbum?

En esta etapa hemos decidido tomarnos un momento para disfrutar y asimilar el trabajo que hemos realizado. Vivimos el presente.
